Kolkata, March 23, Devastating fire breaks in the heart of kolkata Tuesday afternoon in a multi-storey Stephen Court Building in Park Street. Many has been trapped in the 5th and 6th floor of the building. The injured has been taken to SSKM hospital. 30 fire tenders rushed to the building.
The Stephen Court Building is very near to Park Hotel. Music World and Flury’s confectionery is on the ground floor of the building along with many other prestigious shop.
Preliminary investigations pointed that the fire may have broken out due to a short circuit in a lift between the fifth and sixth floors. Smoke was rolling out from two pockets on the top floors which caught fire yesterday afternoon, but the blaze was under complete control, fire officials said. Firefighters, who began search operations from the top floor of the seven-storey building 'Stephen Court' housing restaurants, offices and residences, said the bodies were recovered from the fifth and sixth floors.
Till now 42 dead bodies have been found from the debris of the building. So far only 12 dead bodies have been recognized. Official said still 37 persons are missing. Over 100 workers of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation were engaged in clearing the debris.
The Bengal government has declared a compensation of Rs2 lakh each for the families of those died and has decided to foot the hospital expenses of those injured. The police and fire department filed a complaint against the owner of the building and arrested two of its caretakers.
After 10 days of the incident still the heart of the city is crying for the unexpected death of their loved one. But slowly park street is coming back on track and hope it will get well as earlier very soon.
